Tiwonge Mtande is a Malawian who travelled to Canada to visit the Rotman Institute of Philosophy and receive mentorship from Charles Weijer as the Global Forum on Bioethics in Research 2018 Fellow. With support from Charles, Tiwo wrote a paper on the ethical issues in cluster randomized trials in low-resource settings. This lead to her first scientific publication as a first author. Her interest in cluster trials developed after attending a Global Forum on Bioethics in Research meeting where Charles lead the discussions about ethical issues in cluster trials. In 2020, Tiwo was accepted into a PhD Program at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, under the ARESA Bioethics Leadership program. Her doctoral dissertation is about ethical issues in pragmatic trials involving adolescents. Tiwo enjoys aerobics and her favourite Malawian dish is Nsima with Chambo.
